EU Affairs Committee to hear from RTÉ Europe Editor Tony Connelly and former Diplomat Rory Montgomery on the 50th anniversary of Ireland’s accession to the European Community

7 Feb 2023, 17:14

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet on Wednesday February 8th for a discussion to mark the 50th anniversary of Ireland’s accession to the European Community.

The meeting will take place between 10-30-12-30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House.

RTÉ Europe Editor Tony Connelly and former Irish diplomat Rory Montgomery will appear before the Committee.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Joe McHugh said: “This is a timely opportunity to discuss the 50th anniversary of Ireland joining what we now called the European Union.”

“Just last week President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola addressed a joint sitting of the Houses of the Oireachtas where she spoke of the importance of European unity as the war in Ukraine reaches the one-year mark.”

“The aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, the ongoing war in Ukraine, the current impasse over the Northern Ireland Protocol are among some of the issues facing the bloc but our membership has shown us the strength lies in our unity and that we must continue to progress the core values of peace, democracy and progress that underpin the European Union.”
