EU Affairs Committee to discuss EU-UK Relations and The Windsor Framework with European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič

24 Apr 2023, 16:37

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet on Tuesday April 25th for engagement with Maroš Šefčovič, European Commission Vice President for Inter-institutional Relations and Foresight, on EU-UK Relations and The Windsor Framework.

Mr Šefčovič is Vice President of the European Commission with responsibility for Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight. He is the Co-Chair of the EU-UK Partnership Council established under the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, as well as Co-Chair of the EU-UK Joint Committee established under the Withdrawal Agreement.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House between 15:00-14:30 and the Vice President will participate remotely.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Colm Brophy said: “This is a timely opportunity to discuss EU-UK relations and the Windsor Framework with Mr Šefčovič following the recent 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement and President Biden’s visit to Ireland.”

“In March The EU-UK Joint Committee adopted decision laying down the arrangements relating to the Windsor Framework. This decision covers, amongst others, the arrangements for the movement of goods not at risk of entering the Single Market, the “Stormont Brake”, and VAT and excise-related solutions.”

“Mr Šefčovič has said that the Windsor Framework will allow the EU and the UK to exploit the full potential of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement and ensure frictionless trade across the Irish border.”

“The role of the Northern Ireland Assembly, post-Brexit EU-UK relations, the role of the European Court of Justice in the application of EU rules to Northern Ireland and the Stormont Brake are among the issues we expect to discuss.”
