Ceann Comhairle launches exhibition celebrating Ireland’s 50 years of membership of the European Union

9 May 2023, 12:52

The Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl T.D. launched an exhibition entitled ‘Into Europe: Ireland and the EU’ today, Tuesday 9 May to celebrate Europe Day.

It celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman declaration' when French politician Robert Schuman set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe.

Into Europe is a Royal Irish Academy exhibition commissioned by EU50, DFA, as part of the ongoing Documents in Foreign Policy series, led by Dr Michael Kennedy.

It consists of 12 thematic panels which focus on various aspects of Ireland’s relationship with the European Union. The panels are available in both English and Irish.

Europe Day 2023 marks the culmination of the Government’s EU50 programme which has been celebrating key milestones in the 50 years of Ireland’s EU membership since our decision to join the European Economic Community (EEC).

Speaking at the launch, the Ceann Comhairle said: “This exhibition reminds us of the radical economic and social transformation of our country over the last 50 years. In terms of peace, prosperity and equality, the EU has made Ireland a better place.

“And Ireland has made the EU a better place. When Her Excellency, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, addressed the Houses of the Oireachtas last December, she thanked the Irish people for what we have brought to the EU: our passion for freedom, resolve, ingenuity, openness and optimism.

“That optimism was certainly expressed in the referendum, 51 years ago, when four out of five voters chose a new path for Ireland as a member of the European community.

“I thank the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Royal Irish Academy and the National Archives for bringing us this exhibition.  We should take this opportunity to reflect on what the European Union has meant for us as a nation over the past 50 years and to think about what Ireland can contribute to the EU in years to come."

Leinster House, Government Buildings and Custom House will all be lit up in the European Union colours on Tuesday evening – an enduring symbol of our relationship with Europe.

Managing Editor, Dictionary of Irish Biography, Royal Irish Academy Dr. Eoin Kinsella addressed the event which was also attended by European Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union Mairéad McGuinness, Ambassadors, Members and diplomats.
