Disability Matters Committee to discuss disability inclusive social protection

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will meet on Thursday May 11th to discuss disability inclusive social protection.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 09:30-12:30.

The following representatives are due to appear.

Representatives from Centre for Disability Law and Policy, NUIG, Prof. Eilionóir Flynn, Director
Representatives from Rehab Group , Lucianne Bird, Director of Learning, Adrian Stewart, Head of Employability, and Michael Meere a Rehab Group Advocate and student of National Learning Network


Representatives from International Disability Alliance, Alradi Abdalla, Senior Training Officer
Representatives from Care Alliance Ireland, Zoe Hughes, Senior Policy & Research Officer

Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Moynihan said: ​“We welcome the opportunity to discuss disability inclusive social protection for disabled people.”

“In accordance with Article 28 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the purpose of social protection measures is to ensure an adequate standard of living for persons with disabilities."

"To achieve this, it is important to carry out a comprehensive review of existing social protection measures for disabled people in Ireland and consider how they can be reframed so that they are not based on a medical model of impairment.”
