19 Jun 2023, 11:56

The Joint Committee on Assisted Dying will meet on Tuesday June 19th to discuss assisted dying and the Constitution.

The Committee will also vote on the election of a Vice-Cathaoirleach.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 10:30-14:00.

The following representatives are due to appear:

Dr Conor Casey, University of Surrey

Dr Tom Hickey, Dublin City University

Dr Andrea Mulligan, Trinity College Dublin

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said: “We welcome the opportunity to hear from several academics on the topic of assisted dying and the Constitution. Article 40.3.1 and 40.3.2 of our Constitution place an express and solemn duty on the State and its organs – legislative, executive, judicial - to protect the sanctity of all human life.”

“As a Committee we look forward to hearing the views of representatives on how we as legislators must consider the need to balance various rights and the need examine potential consequences.”
