Joint Committee on Assisted Dying to discuss the topic of consent and capacity

26 Jun 2023, 19:00

The Joint Committee on Assisted Dying will meet on Tuesday June 27th on the topic of consent and capacity in relation to assisted dying.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 10:30-14:00.

The following representatives are due to appear:

  • Dr. Louise Campbell, NUI Galway
  • Mr Finn Keys, BL

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss the topic of consent and capacity in relation to assisted dying and the ethical dilemmas that may arise during end of life care.”

“Under the Assisted Decision (Capacity) Act 2015 which was introduced this year, a person can stipulate their will and preferences in relation to future treatment decisions, including a refusal of treatment that would prolong life but cannot consent to being killed or have their life taken.”

“We look forward to discussing the distinctions that have been drawn by the courts within the current legal framework in order to accommodate humane end of life practices and how we as legislators can examine the current legal framework in respect of assisted dying.”
