Joint Committee on Assisted Dying to discuss legal protections and sanctions in relation to assisted dying

3 Jul 2023, 16:12

The Joint Committee on Assisted Dying will meet on Tuesday, July 4th to discuss legal protections and sanctions in relation to assisted dying.

The meeting will take place between 11:00-14:00 in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House.

The following representatives are due to appear:

  • Kevin Kelly BL Degree Candidate at the Honorable Society of King’s Inns
  • Simon Mills Senior Counsel
  • Professor Richard Huxtable, University of Bristol

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss legal protections and sanctions in relation to assisted dying with representatives.

“The only method through which the Oireachtas can successfully provide for assisted dying will be wholly dependent on the legal protections and sanctions regime it implements to accompany any new legislation.”

"If a decision were to be made to legalise assisted dying in some form, then it is important that there are safeguards, ongoing monitoring and that boundaries are enforced with suitable penalties available and applied to those who fail to comply.”
