Good Friday Committee to discuss workers’ rights with representatives from ICTU, INTO and SIPTU

20 Sep 2023, 16:54

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet on Thursday September 21st for a discussion on workers rights and constitutional change.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 09:30-12:30.

The following representatives are due to appear:

  • Owen Reidy, General Secretary and Mr. Justin McCamphill, President of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU)
  • John Boyle, General Secretary Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO)
  • Gerry McCormack Deputy General Secretary of SIPTU

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said: “We welcome the opportunity to meet with three large unions regarding their perspectives on constitutional change in the area of finance and economics and the impact on workers' rights, north and south of the border.”

“Brexit and various other factors have created the context whereby discussion and debate about the possibility of constitutional change on the island of Ireland has come to the fore.”

“Thousands of people travel across the Border to work each day and it is crucial that people who choose to work in Northern Ireland do not fall behind due to a lack of alignment on workers’ rights in both jurisdictions on the island of Ireland.”
