The Joint Committee on Justice will meet tomorrow, Tuesday 24th October 2023 for engagement on Policing Matters.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House at 4pm.

The Committee will hear from representatives from:

  • Garda Representative Association
  • Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors
  • Restaurants Association of Ireland
  • Mr Anthony Gallagher, Retired Garda Sergeant

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy James Lawless TD said “Our Committee is very aware of the impact that crime continues to have on society in Ireland. Tomorrow’s meeting presents an opportunity to hear from a number of key stakeholders in relation to the following themes:

1.Challenges related to recruitment and retention; rostering and general morale within the force.

 2. Policing Dublin City – perceived increase in street crime – is the current approach working?

 3. Policing of protests – is the correct balance being struck in the context of the right to assemble peacefully.

We will look to get important insights from the stakeholders attending tomorrow in order for our Committee to able to bring tangible recommendations on policing in Ireland to the Department.”

The meeting can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
