This week we, the Speakers of the Irish Parliament, met the families of the men, women and children who are being held hostage by Hamas in Gaza.
We witnessed their pain and anguish and heard their pleas for help. In response all we could offer was a listening ear and the promise of our unstinting support for the release of their loved ones.
Ireland has a deep understanding of the suffering of the Palestinian people. As a nation we have been compassionate, providing support and assistance to them in their struggle.
We respectfully now seek the same compassion and support for the hostages from Israel. They should be released immediately and returned safely to the loving care of their families.
