The Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 11 April, to resume consideration of Public Petition Number P00030/23 ‘Create a walking and cycling greenway on the closed railway from Sligo to Athenry’ from Western Rail Trail.

The meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House will hear from representatives of Mayo County Council and Iarnród Éireann.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Martin Browne said: “The Committee heard from members of the Western Rail Trail group in January about their campaign to develop the disused to Sligo to Athenry rail line as a walking and cycling greenway serving the people of counties Galway, Mayo and Sligo.

“Members now look forward to hearing from Mayo County Council and Iarnród Éireann about their views on this petition and current proposals for the former rail corridor, including under the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy 2020-2032, the National Development Plan and the recently published All-Island Rail Review.”

The Committee will also consider the following petitions:

  • Public Petition Number P00024/23 ‘Electric Scooter Safety, Standards and Requirements’ (resumed);
  • Public Petition Number P00045/23 ‘Accept our cash’ (resumed);
  • Public Petition Number P00020/24 ‘Make unlawfully killing a pet an offence akin to murder, not criminal damage’;
