The Joint Committee on Justice to meet for engagement with representatives from the Legal Services Regulatory Authority

17 Jun 2024, 17:03

The Joint Committee on Justice chaired by Deputy James Lawless will meet tomorrow, Tuesday 18th June 2024 at 4pm in Committee Room 1 for 2 sessions. In the first session they will engage with representatives from the Legal Services Regulatory Authority. And then in the second session will meet for a briefing on the general scheme of the Courts, Civil Law, Criminal Law and Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach, James Lawless TD said “In our first session tomorrow we will welcome representatives from the Legal Services Regulatory Authority. The LSRA is tasked with the regulation of legal services provision by solicitors and barristers. They are required by law to help consumers resolve any complaints they have regarding inadequate legal services or issues in relation to costs.

“We look forward to focussing on the work of the LSRA tomorrow and within our engagement we will seek further insight into their report published in April of this year which contained details into the operation of their independent complaints function.

“In the second session we will meet with Departmental Officials for a briefing as part of the Pre-Legislative scrutiny of the general scheme of the Courts, Civil Law, Criminal Law and Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024. The Bill is a miscellaneous provisions bill and provides for a number of unrelated matters.”

The meeting can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
