Vol. 3 No. 24

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - OFFALY POSTMAN'S ARREST.

asked the Minister for Defence if he can state the reason for the arrest of Patrick Dunn, Postman, Alderboro, Geashill, Offaly, on the 18th January, 1923; whether he signed the usual undertaking while in Templemore Detention Barracks, and also obtained two local clergymen to guarantee his future good behaviour; whether his army (British) pension of 18s. 6d. per week was cancelled as a result of his arrest, and whether he is now prepared to recommend his release and reinstatement in his former position, as well as payment of arrears due to him for pension since the date of his arrest.

Dunn was arrested on reliable information to the effect that he was acting as an Irregular Intelligence Officer. He has signed the usual form of undertaking. Three clergymen have testified to his good character, but none of them gave any guarantee as to his future good behaviour. It is not considered advisable to release him at present. The matter of his pension appears to be entirely one for the British Ministry of Pensions.
