Vol. 6 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - TIRCONAILL MOTOR DUTY—(COST OF COLLECTION.)

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state what was the amount of motor vehicles duty paid in Tirconaill during the year 1923, and the annual cost of the collection of this tax in that county?

The total amount of the receipts from Motor Vehicle Licence Duty and Drivers' Licences paid in Tirconaill during the year 1923 was approximately £8,745, and the total claim for expenses in respect of the 18 months ending 30th September last was £269 6s. 11d., of which £226 2s. 9d. has been paid. The annual cost would therefore be something about £180.

Is the Minister not of opinion that the expense is very great for such a small collection—it costs £180 to collect £8,000?

Not under the exceptional circumstances of the case.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, may I point out that during 1922 no steps were taken in any shape or form to collect this money, and that, therefore, the cost of collection does not arise for any part of 1922. I am given information for 18 months ending September last, whereas I asked for information for the year 1922.

I will look into that question again.
