Vol. 7 No. 22

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - GUNS COMMANDEERED BY IRISH VOLUNTEERS.

asked the Minister for Defence if the Government will take steps or order the giving back by those persons who are at present in possession of guns which were given to or commandeered by the Irish Volunteers in 1920, whether he is aware that all efforts of the rightful owners by persuasion have failed in very many cases for restoration of those weapons, which are needed for the protection of their crops, which are being destroyed by rabbits and birds.

I am not aware of any cases where guns surrendered to, or commandeered by, Volunteers in 1920, are now being held by persons who are not the original owners. If particulars are furnished of well-authenticated cases of the kind, the matter will receive consideration.

Arising out of that answer, I would like to ask the President whether in cases where these weapons cannot be traced, the Government will be prepared to pay compensation for guns that are missing in this way?

I am introducing a Bill, I think this evening, in which that question arises, and I think it will probably be to the satisfaction of the Deputy.
