Vol. 8 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CO. ROSCOMMON AWARD.

Mr. HENNESSY (for Aindriú O Laimhín)

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state how the sum of £50 was arrived at as compensation for the parents of Terence McGlynn, of Cootehall, Co. Roscommon, who was killed in an ambush by British Forces in Harcourt Street, Dublin, on the 6th April, 1921, considering that the funeral expenses from Dublin to his home cost over £60, and that his parents are at present very poor.

Compensation for the parents of the late Terence McGlynn was awarded under the provisions of Section 8 and Paragraphs 7 and 8 of the Army Pensions Act, 1923. The change of circumstances of the parents as a result of his death were duly investigated. It was ascertained that they had been only partially dependent on him. They are, therefore, not entitled to a pension. A gratuity for £50 was, however, granted to them after consideration of their circumstances, in conjunction with the fact that the maximum allowable in any similar case under the Act is £100.
