Vol. 8 No. 22

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMMANDEERED MOTOR CAR (TERENURE).

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that a motor car, the property of Mr. James Macken, Eagle Hill House, Terenure, in respect of the commandeering of which by the Army, compensation was paid in and for the period up to March, 1923, was not returned to the owner until August, 1923; and whether he will order a further payment to be made in respect of the further period of five months during which the car was in the possession of the Army.

£150 was paid to Mr. Macken in March, 1923. It was decided at the same time to repair certain damage done to his car. Repairs necessarily involving its further retention by the Army were carried out, to the value of about £75. The car was then returned to Mr. Macken on the 4th September, 1923, in at least as good a condition as it was when commandeered. Under these circumstances, having regard to the fact that the car cost Mr. Macken £220 in June, 1922, it is not proposed to make any further payment to him.
