Vol. 9 No. 27

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - GARRENDENNY DEPENDENTS' ALLOWANCE.

asked the Minister for Defence if Bridget Byrne, Garrendenny, is in receipt of dependants' allowance in respect of her two sons, John and Edward Byrne, who joined the National Army in February and May, 1923, and who prior to enlistment contributed between them over two pounds ten shillings per week to the household, and if not, whether he will take this case into consideration and have it reviewed?

Mrs Byrne's claims were rejected on the grounds that the amounts normally contributed by her sons, John and Edward, to the home over and above the cost of their own maintenance therein for a reasonable period prior to enlistment were less than the minimum required by regulations, namely 12s. per week, before an allowance might be issued. It was ascertained that John Byrne had not been in regular employment for a considerable time before joining the Forces and that Edward's net contribution to the home amounted to about 8s per week. There are therefore no grounds on which the claims could be reconsidered.
