Vol. 9 No. 27

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LIMERICK COMPENSATION CLAIM

asked the Minister for Defence if he has received an application for compensation from Mr. George Hehir, Limerick, in respect of his daughter, Kathleen Hehir, aged 17 years, who was shot by a soldier of the National Army on December 24th, 1922; if he is aware that at the inquiry which was held the applicant was informed by the Military Authorities that they had nothing to do in the matter, and consequently no compensation was allowed; whether in view of the poor circumstances of the applicant, who has a large family, and of the fact that his daughter contributed to the support of the home, he will reconsider this claim for compensation.

An application for compensation was received in this case, but as no evidence was forthcoming to show that the shot inflicting the fatal injuries was fired by a soldier, the claim could not be admitted as a charge against Army Funds.

It is understood, however, that the claim was considered by the Minister for Finance, who, on the recommendation of the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee, made an ex gratia grant of £40 on the 19th June last to the father of the deceased, through Messrs Wm. Leahy and Son, Solicitors, Limerick.
