Vol. 11 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - IMPORTED CARCASES OF PIGS.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture whether his attention has been called to the fact that 1,050 carcases of New Zealand pigs for curing purposes were imported by Messrs. Cook and McNeilly, Sligo, during the months of February, March and April, 1925, and it is alleged were subsequently exported to Scotland sold as Irish cured bacon, and if, in view of the very serious injustice to the Irish bacon trade, he will take steps to prevent a recurrence of this traffic.

I am aware that carcases of pigs have been imported recently into Sligo, and investigations are being made as to the manner in which they are being disposed of. When the investigations have been completed, any steps which it may be found possible to take, under the provisions of the Merchandise Marks Acts, to prevent the sale as Irish bacon of bacon made from imported carcases will be taken.

Will the Minister agree that this is a very good argument for protection on bacon?

Mr. HOGAN

No.

Will the Minister say if he has any information that a similar state of affairs prevails anywhere else in the country?

Mr. HOGAN

This is the first case of this kind that has come to my knowledge.
