Vol. 14 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - INTOXICATING LIQUOR TRADE.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Justice if it is his intention to introduce legislation dealing generally with the intoxicating liquor trade on the lines recommended by the Intoxicating Liquor Commission, and in particular, the recommendation that the Sunday bona fide traveller traffic limit should be increased from five miles to ten miles from Dublin, and restricted to the hours of 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and, if so, whether it is proposed to provide that those licensed traders whose premises are just beyond the present five miles limit and whose trade is almost wholly dependent upon the Sunday bona fide traveller should be compensated in accordance with the representations made before the Commission on behalf of the licensed trade.

The report of the Intoxicating Liquor Commission has not yet been considered in detail by the Executive Council. It is probable that a Bill based broadly on the recommendations of the Commission will be introduced this year. The Deputy will appreciate that it is not possible at this stage to forecast the provisions of that Bill.

Can the Minister say whether the broad embodiment of the recommendations of the Commission will include an extension of the limit beyond the village of Clondalkin?

I could not say.
