Vol. 14 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DRAINAGE WORKS IN KILDARE.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the large numbers of unemployed throughout the County Kildare, he will give instructions to the Commissioners of Public Works to inspect and report on the conditions of the various drainage districts in the county and execute such works and improvements as they shall consider necessary, according to the provisions of the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1924.

In the distribution of work under the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1924, County Kildare has received due consideration.

There are fourteen drainage districts situated entirely or partly in County Kildare. All of these have been under consideration by the Commissioners of Public Works in connection with the Act, and in nine cases it has been decided that the circumstances do not call for Government intervention under the Act at present.

In one case action has been deferred pending the carrying out of works in more urgent cases.

In the remaining four cases—Ballycowan, Blackwater, Boyne and Lerr districts—a total sum of £6,900 was expended under the Act in 1925, and it is proposed this year to expend a further sum of about £1,800 on the River Lerr district.
