CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LONGFORD ESTATES—ACQUISITION OF.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture how far proceedings have advanced in the Land Commission for the acquisition, purchase and distribution of the estate of Sholto-Douglas, Co. Longford; also in regard to the estates of William Notley, Claris, Newtown-cashel; Colonel Dopping, Dring, Granard; King Harman Estate, Forgney; and, further, in respect of what other estates in County Longford notice has been served by the Land Commission on the owners of their intention to acquire same for distribution under the Land Act, 1923, and the acreage in each case.

The position as regard the estates referred to is as follows:—

1. Estate of Colonel Sholto-Douglas. —This is a tenanted estate which is being dealt with by the Land Commission under the Land Act, 1923. The Commission published on 12th February last a notice in Iris Oifigiúil that certain holdings in this estate, seven in number, would be retained by the Land Commission on the appointed day as specified in Section 28, sub-section 6, Land Act. 1923. The tenants have objected and the case has been heard by the Land Commission who have reserved their decision.

2. Estate of William Notley.— This is a tenanted holding in the Bond Estate (S. 4225), which the Commission propose to retain. The matter will be dealt with by the Land Commission in connection with the sale of the estate.

3. Colonel Dopping, lands of Dring. —Lands of Dring are included as tenanted lands on the estate of Colonel Dopping-Hepenstal, the appointed day for which has been fixed. There are no untenanted lands in this estate.

4. King Harman Estate. —Lands of Forgney. These lands cannot be identified as pending for sale under the Land Act. Untenanted lands on this estate, situate in townland of Annagh and Barnacor, comprising 990 acres, 5 perches, have been acquired and divided.

The area vested in the Land Commission has been divided. In addition to the above some 14,000 acres of untenanted land in County Longford have been inspected, or are the subject of inquiries as to suitability for acquisition by the Land Commission for purposes of distribution.
