Vol. 15 No. 21

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - INQUIRY INTO CONDITION OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS.

asked the Minister for Education whether the inquiry by officials of his Department into the condition of school buildings referred to during the debate on the policy of the Minister for Education last November has yet been completed, and, if so, if he is in a position to give the result of this inquiry.

The inspectors of the Department were instructed to furnish returns giving particulars regarding (a) cases in which, owing to the defective condition of existing schools new school buildings are required; (b) cases in which schoolhouses require to be enlarged or structurally improved; and (c) cases in which new schools are required where none exist at present.

Most of the returns have already been received and it is expected that they will be complete at an early date, when the statistics supplied will be tabulated for consideration in connection with the whole question of school accommodation.

Mr. O'CONNELL

Would the Minister say if the inspectors were asked to report in the case of each school what provision was made for general maintenance and upkeep? I understood that that was part of the inquiry and I would like to know if that has been done.

I shall have to ask the Deputy to put down that question.
