Vol. 17 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CONSTRUCTION OF COUNTY CORK SLIP.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that in a reply to a Parliamentary question on November 4th, 1924, it was stated that work on the construction of a slip at Goleen, Co. Cork, was about to start; whether he is aware that this work was not since undertaken, and if he can indicate when the work will start.

It is a fact that at the end of 1924 work was contemplated on the construction of a slip at Goleen. At that time, however, local labour was unavailable, and the work was left over. The subject was again broached in the beginning of 1926, but on receipt of an Inspector's report that the employment given in the construction of a slip would not be commensurate with the expense involved, it was decided to postpone the work in favour of other more necessary schemes.

Owing to the fact that there is no provision in the current year's Estimates for starting new Relief works, it is not possible now to proceed with the work.

Mr. MURPHY

Would the President indicate what the other claims were which took precedence over this work, because my information is that there is no work of any kind being done there at the present time?

If I understand the Deputy's question correctly, it is whether this work was postponed in view of other works. That is not the case. The subject was broached in the beginning of 1926, but, on receipt of an Inspector's report that the employment given in the construction of the slip would not be commensurate with the expense involved, it was decided to postpone the work in favour of other more necessary schemes.

Mr. MURPHY

In the same area?

I cannot answer that. I will ask the Minister whether they are in the same area.

Mr. MURPHY

In view of the fact that a very large number of people in this district have been making application to the Officer in charge of Public Assistance for Home Assistance, does not the President think that this would be a feasible scheme for the relief of such a position, even if the employment would not be very considerable?
