Vol. 20 No. 5

IN COMMITTEE ON FINANCE. - VOTE 12—STATE LABORATORY.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £4,567 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1927, chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí na Saotharlainne Stáit.

That a sum not exceeding £4,567 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1927, for the Salaries and Expenses of the State Laboratory.

There is very little difference in this Vote as compared with last year. There is a nett decrease of £133. That is due to the decrease of £300 in the provision necessary for apparatus and chemical equipment; on the other hand, there was a slight increase in the provision of salaries and wages due for increments. In the State Laboratory there are analyses of something like 30,000 samples, most of which are for the Revenue Commissioners for the purpose of assessing duty or for the purpose of enabling drawbacks to be made on certain dutiable goods to be paid on exportation. There are analyses for the Department of Lands and Agriculture, including samples of dairy produce, margarine, fertilisers, and feeding stuffs. The total number in the last year for which I have figures was 27,405; for the Department of Lands and Agriculture 6,919, and smaller numbers for a great many of other Departments including the Department of Justice, because analyses necessary in connection with criminal prosecutions are carried out in the State Laboratory.

Vote put and agreed to.
