Vol. 20 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - AGRICULTURAL SCHEMES FOR CAVAN.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether, in view of the fact that Cavan is a congested county and in the matter of agricultural schemes should be treated in the same way as other such districts and of the admission to this effect of the Minister for Lands and Agriculture in the Dáil on the 18th June, 1926, he will see that the necessary arrangements will be made so that the special schemes referred to may be put into operation in this county in the coming year.

Even though Cavan is not legally a "congested" county, nevertheless so far as Land Commission administration is concerned it is treated in the same way as a county like Leitrim, which is defined as a congested county.

My question has reference specifically to agricultural schemes. The Parliamentary Secretary has to do with more than distribution of lands, and I want to ask if the Minister is prepared to give effect to the promises he gave me on June 18th, that the schemes applicable to congested districts would be made applicable to this county, which has not been done up to the present.

I assumed when the question was addressed to the Minister for Fisheries that the Deputy was referring to work formerly done by the Department of Land and Agriculture, and which has now been transferred to the Minister for Fisheries—that is to say, Land Commission administration. It is for that reason that this has been answered in the way it has. I thought that was a natural assumption. May I say that schemes of the Department of Agriculture, such as special premiums for bulls and special term bulls apply, as far as I am aware—I may be wrong —to Cavan in the same way as to Leitrim. However, I will inquire further.

Will the Minister take steps to see that the position is examined?

Mr. HOGAN

I will.
