Vol. 32 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Smythe Estate, Barbaville (Westmeath).

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state when it is intended to vest the lands of the Smythe estate, Barbaville, County Westmeath.

The prescribed schedules of particulars of the lands on the estate of Mrs. A. Lyster Smythe, County Westmeath, comprising 46 holdings, situate in the townlands of Ballybeg, Barbaville Demesne, Collinstown and Ranaghan, have been lodged to enable the lands to be vested in the Land Commission under the Land Act, 1923, but the Land Commission are not at present in a position to state when it may be reached in its turn to be dealt with by them.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary indicate what is to prevent the inspector finishing the work there and having the lands vested? If there are any obstacles, what are they? For six years they have been inspecting that estate.

The schedules of particulars were lodged on the 28th July, 1926. As well as the tenanted holdings on this estate, there is a large acreage of untenanted land, portion of which the Land Commission is endeavouring to acquire at the moment. Until those negotiations are completed, the tenanted holdings cannot be dealt with.
