Vol. 36 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alleged Fracas in Hotel.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that it is stated that on the night of the 11th instant or thereabouts, members of the Gárda Síochána and members of the Detective Division of the Gárda Síochána engaged in a fracas among themselves at Cullen's Hotel, Mountrath, Leix, as a result of which shots were discharged, and Mr. James Cullen, son of the proprietor of the hotel, wounded in the foot, and if he has made any inquiry into the matter; and, if so, with what result.

The Deputy appears to have been misinformed. No fracas of the type suggested by him took place. Some members of the Gárda Síochána were, however, on the hotel premises on the 6th instant (not the 11th, as suggested in the question). A revolver accidentally fell upon the floor and discharged, and Mr. Cullen was wounded in the ankle. Statements have been taken from all concerned, and I am satisfied that there is no foundation for the suggestions in the question.

Were members of the Civic Guard on licensed premises after closing hours?

Has any disciplinary action been taken against them on that account?

A man can be on licensed premises after closing hours if he is a bona-fide traveller. The matter will be inquired into, and in fact is being inquired into.

Did they search anyone going home?
