Vol. 40 No. 16

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission and Mayo Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state whether any action has been taken by the Land Commission as a result of their inquiries into the position of the tenants on the Blake estate at Ballyhowley, Swinford, Co. Mayo; and, further, when the tenants on this estate who are now sub-tenants of Mr. Durkin, Swinford, Co. Mayo, will be brought directly under the Land Commission.

The question of improvements to the holdings on the estate of Valentine J. Blake, comprising the lands of Cloongullaune, has been noted for consideration prior to the vesting of the holdings in the tenants. The holding of Mrs. Eliza Durkin on the estate is for the most part sub-let; and the question of treating the sub-tenants as direct tenants will be dealt with in due course.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that over a year ago I was written to in the very same strain and that it was then stated by the Land Commission that they were having inquiries made into the whole matter and that steps would be taken at an early date? Has anything been done since?

It was very doubtful if the question of sub-tenants could have been dealt with until after the new Land Act was passed.
