Vol. 41 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prices of Protected Irish Products.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what steps he proposes to take to ensure that there will be no increase in prices to the consumer of the various Irish products to which protective duties have been extended by the various Customs Duties Orders made since March last, and when such steps will be taken.

I hope to be in a position at an early date to introduce legislation embodying provisions calculated to prevent undue increases in prices.

Mr. Murphy

In view of the uneasiness that prevails in the country I want to ask if the Minister could give any indication of the date on which he will be prepared to do that?

The legislation is being prepared and will be introduced as soon as I get it from the draftsman.

Will the Minister say whether he expects that the early date will be before there is a definite increase in prices?

I have already explained to Deputy Murphy that the Bill will be introduced as soon as it can be prepared in its final form and when it emerges from the draftsman.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned.

Will the Minister see that this measure gets precedence over other measures in the draftsman's office?
