Vol. 42 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duties on Imported Razor Blades.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that duties on imported razor blades have been levied and collected within the months of May and June: and whether he will state what steps, if any, he proposes to take to refund the payments of such duties to the payees and to prohibit their collection in future.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. Imported razor blades are liable to Customs duty under No. 27 (b) of the Schedule to Financial Resolution No. 7, and duty is being levied and collected accordingly. Hence the second part of the question does not arise.

Mr. Byrne

Did the Minister for Industry and Commerce not inform the House on June 8th that razor blades were not subject to any import duty?

I am not aware that the Minister for Industry and Commerce made such a statement.

Will the Minister state the reason for the imposition of this tariff?

Mr. Byrne

If such a statement has been made by the Minister for Industry and Commerce, will the Minister for Finance agree to the remission of this duty?
