Vol. 47 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Mackerel Nets in Wexford Lake.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware that mackerel nets are used for the capture of bass and mullet in Tacumshane Lake, County Wexford; that no salmon or trout have ever been caught in that lake and that people living in the vicinity of it have been summoned for using mackerel nets; and if he will state what licence, if any, is payable before mackerel nets for capturing mullet and bass may be used.

I am aware that small meshed nets have been used as a seine net for the capture of fish in this lake. I am advised that salmon and sea trout do frequent this lake. A prosecution was brought by the Wexford Board of Conservators last year for using an unlicensed net on the lake and the court found the case proved. No licence duty is payable in respect of nets used for the capture of any fish other than salmon, trout, pollan and eels.
