Vol. 47 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Bogs.

asked the Minister for Finance whether in view of the policy enunciated in his Budget statement as to the expenditure of £100,000 for the drainage of bogs, the construction of bog roads and minor works of a character ancillary thereto, he will make the money immediately available in view of the fact that such drainage schemes can only effectively be carried out in the summer months, and whether he will take steps to have an immediate survey made of the bogs in West and South Kerry with a view to the proper development and exploitation of such bogs and the use of peat and turf.

The necessary Supplementary Estimate for the additional moneys proposed to be made available for relief schemes, including the works referred to in the first part of the Deputy's question will, it is hoped, be introduced at an early date. As regards the second part, the question of the organisation and development of the peat industry, for which a sum of £50,000 has been earmarked in the Budget, is receiving the close attention of the Minister for Industry and Commerce and the necessary preliminary arrangements are at the moment under examination. The claims of West and South Kerry to consideration in this connection will be borne in mind.
