Vol. 47 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Completion of Bray Works.

asked the Minister for Finance if he proposes to give a further grant to complete the works already begun and partly finished on the bed and banks of the Dargle River, with the object of rendering Little Bray more immune from periodical flooding, as unless the works are completed the good effects of what has already been done will to a great extent be nullified, and if he is aware that if the grant was now forthcoming it would have the further good of absorbing many of the unemployed in the town which now reaches the figure of 500.

The Commissioner administering the affairs of the Urban District has prepared a scheme for the completion of the works for protection against flooding by the River Dargle. The Minister for Local Government and Public Health has accorded his sanction to the raising of a loan to meet the expenditure involved.

Can the Minister give me any idea as to how soon this work will be started? I have just come from a meeting of the unemployed in Bray and I can assure the Minister that the position is really very serious. I should like if he would give me some indication as to when the work will be started.

I do not think that the Government has any responsibility for the date upon which these works will be begun. We have given the necessary financial sanction to the loan. The rest must necessarily lie with the local authority.
