Vol. 51 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Approval of Afforestation Schemes.

(Clare) asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state whether the proposals submitted to his Department with reference to afforestation schemes on the Clare-Galway border extending from Whitegate into Cregg and Derrygoolin have yet been approved, and if in view of the unemployment in the Whitegate and other areas he will give early sanction to the proposed work.

Two blocks of land in the district referred to in the question have been offered for sale for State forestry purposes. One of these, situated in the townland of Derryoran and containing about 300 acres, has been surveyed but was found to be unsuitable for acquisition. The other area consists of 625 acres of land owned by six different tenants in the district of Whitegate. It has not yet been found possible to have a survey made of these lands but arrangements for inspection will be made at the earliest possible date.
