Vol. 52 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naas Baton Charge.

asked the Minister for Justice (1) if his attention has been called to a baton charge at a public auction at Naas on April 28th; (2) if he is aware that the general opinion is that this drastic police action was unnecessary; (3) whether he has any facts in his possession which in his opinion warranted the batoning of the public; and (4) if the police officer who ordered the charge has been censured for his action on that occasion.

The answers to the first and third parts of the question are in the affirmative and to the second and fourth parts in the negative.

In view of the unsatisfactory reply of the Minister and as it is impossible to ventilate this most serious matter by question and answer, I give notice that I will seek the privilege of the House by raising it on the Adjournment.

Perhaps the Deputy would consider raising it on the Department of Justice vote which will come on after the Budget statement?

It will be smothered on the Justice vote.

It will be smothered anyway.

If I am not committed to confining myself entirely to it, I shall do so, provided that I am given the opportunity of raising it on the Adjournment, should I think it necessary.
