Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Unemployment Assistance Act.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the number of persons from whom applications for qualification certificates under the Unemployment Assistance Act, 1933, were received up to and including 21st July and the number of such applicants to whom qualification certificates were issued; (b) the number of persons from whom appeals have been referred to the Appeals Committee and the number of such appeals already determined; (c) the number of claims to unemployment assistance current each week subsequent to 4th June; (d) the number of persons to whom payments were made in the week ending 21st July, and (e) the total sum represented by such payments.

(a) Up to and including 21st July, 1934, applications for qualification certificates, under the Unemployment Assistance Act, 1933, were received from 204,236 persons. Up to and including the same date, qualification certificates were issued to 117,629 persons, and refused to 14,923 persons.

(b) Up to and including 29th July, 1934, 3,792 appeals were received by the Unemployment Appeals Committee, in 1,795 of which decisions have been given.

(c) The total number of applications for unemployment assistance current at the local offices of the Department on:—

(d) The total number of persons to whom unemployment assistance was paid in the week ended 20th July, 1934, was 27,416.

(e) The total amount of unemployment assistance paid to such persons in the week ended 20th July, 1934, was £11,553.
