Vol. 56 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Report on Price of Bread.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the Prices Commission has submitted their report on the investigation into the price of bread, and, if so, whether it is the intention to publish this report.

The Prices Commission have not yet submitted their report on the investigation into the price of bread and I am informed that the Commission have decided before completing this report, which is well advanced, to await further financial returns from the firms concerned. It is anticipated that the report will be made at an early date.

Is the Minister aware that, consequent upon an agreement with the Minister for Agriculture, the millers increased the price of bakers' flour by 3/6 per sack before the 1st August and that there has been ½d per 4lb. loaf put on the price of bread? Has he had any agreement with the Minister for Agriculture on this subject?

The Deputy's information, as usual, is inaccurate, and, therefore, his second question does not arise.

The Deputy's information is perfectly accurate and he understands there has been an agreement to increase the price of flour to the bakers by 3/6 a sack before the 1st August in the hope of transferring the wheat subsidy from the central fund to the price of flour?

Would the Deputy publish the terms of this alleged agreement?

That is the function of the Minister for Agriculture. Would the Deputy put down a question to the Minister with a view to inducing him to do so?
