Vol. 61 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion in County Galway.

Mr. Brodrick

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists in the vicinity of the Daly Estate, Belleville, Athenry, and on the Roche Estate, Rychill, Monivea, County Galway, and if he will state what steps, if any, have been taken by the Irish Land Commission to acquire these estates for the relief of the existing congestion.

The Land Commission are aware of the conditions existing in the vicinity of the Daly and Roche estates and are at present making investigations regarding 235 acres of Belleville Demesne and about 360 acres in and adjoining Ryehill Demesne. These investigations will be expedited as much as possible.

Mr. Brodrick

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that acute congestion exists adjacent to and on the Ffrench Estate, Monivea, County Galway; whether seeing that the Land Commission have only acquired 133 acres of the said estate, which will be insufficient to relieve the existing congestion, he will direct the Land Commission to make further inquiries relative to the suitability of the other part of this estate for acquisition.

The Land Commission are aware that congestion exists adjacent to the French Estate at Monivea Demesne. They have already inspected this demesne and have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of that part of the estate suitable for the relief of congestion.

Mr. Brodrick

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's reply, would it be possible to give any idea as to the further acreage they are about to acquire in Monivea?

The Land Commission have acquired that portion of the land which they consider suitable for Land Commission purposes, and my information is that with the exception of the portion attached to the residence the remaining land is utterly useless for Land Commission purposes.
