Vol. 61 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pier and Shelter at St. Helen's, County Wexford.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he can hold out any hope that the small fishing pier and shelter at St. Helen's, County Wexford, will be put in better condition before the lobster fishing season starts, as at present the fishermen believe it would not be safe to launch their boats there, and if some assurance is given that the harbour will be renovated they could go ahead with the work of getting their gear and boats ready for the sea.

I have already been exploring the possibility of obtaining some State assistance towards the cost of effecting the structural repairs needed to the pier at St. Helen's. I feel, however, that the prospect of having anything done in the case before the opening of the coming lobster season is remote.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I wish to ask whether he is aware that there are several people along the Wexford coast who depend on lobster fishing for their livelihood?

Dr. Ryan

Yes, that is so.

May I hope that the Minister will expedite his inquiries so that something may be done before the opening of the lobster season as French and other fishing boats are operating in the neighbourhood?

Dr. Ryan

I will do what is possible in the matter.
