Vol. 61 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballinakill (Laoighis) Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that the residents of Ballinakill, County Leix, have repeatedly alleged that water supplied by the few public pumps in the town is unfit for use, and that the necessary water has to be secured from private pumps; whether any report has been called for by the commissioner from the county or local medical officers of health, and, if so, if he will state the nature of same, and whether he will request the commissioner to expedite the provision of a water supply scheme for this town and state the position of his Department concerning the history of this long delayed scheme.

A water supply scheme for Ballinakill was adopted by the commissioner in December last. Following examination in the Department of the plans, certain amendments were indicated to the consulting engineer in January, 1936. The revised plans have not yet been received, and the matter is being taken up with the commissioner.

As regards the last paragraph of the question, a scheme was undertaken in 1932, but the water at the source was found to be inadequate. The gauging supplied at the time by the late consulting engineer subsequently proved to be inaccurate.
