Vol. 62 No. 3

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Benefit Claim.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why payment of unemployment insurance benefit has been refused to Mr. Cecil Hunt, West End, Monasterevan.

The claim to unemployment benefit lodged by Mr. Cecil Hunt on the 2nd March, 1936, was disallowed under Section 8 (2) of the Unemployment Insurance Act, 1920, for six weeks from and including the 29th February, 1936. Mr. Hunt appealed against that decision to the court of referees. His appeal was before the court on the 8th instant. A notification of the date and place of sitting was sent to him on the 4th instant, when he was also invited to be present during the consideration of his case. He did not attend. The court, however, adjourned the hearing of the case until the next sitting, requesting that Mr. Hunt should be specially invited to attend to give evidence. The adjourned hearing will take place at Carlow on next Monday, the 18th instant. Mr. Hunt has been specially invited to attend the hearing, and to facilitate him in this connection a railway warrant has been issued for his railway fare.

Can the Minister give any information as to the circumstances relating to the relevant section that covered the disqualification—the actual circumstances of that case?

I cannot. It is under Section 8 (2).

Mr. Murphy

Can the Minister say whether it is a fact that this man asked for an increase in the very small wages he was getting, and that he was dismissed because he applied?

I could not say. I do not know if that is the position.
