Vol. 62 No. 13

Employment of Women in Mines—Approval of Draft Convention.

I move:—

That Dáil Eireann approves of the draft convention concerning the employment of women on underground work in mines of all kinds adopted by the International Labour Conference at its 19th Session a copy of which was laid on the Table of the Dáil on the 15th day of January, 1936, and recommends the Executive Council to take the necessary steps for its ratification.

At the 19th Session of the International Labour Conference, held in Geneva in 1935, a draft convention was adopted concerning the employment of women on underground work in mines of all kinds. Subject to certain exemptions, the draft convention prohibits the employment on underground work in mines of females, irrespective of age. The draft convention has been presented to the Oireachtas. The existing legislation in the Saorstát is adequate for the implementation of the prohibition contained in the draft convention, and, if ratified, new legislation will not be required. I think the Dáil should approve of the convention and I recommend that the necessary steps be taken to ratify it.

Motion agreed to.
