Vol. 63 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Co. Kilkenny Unemployment Assistance Claim.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that Michael Fanning, Urlingford, County Kilkenny, was deprived of unemployment assistance on the ground that he was not genuinely seeking work; whether Mr. Fanning furnished to the Department documentary evidence showing that in fact he had made genuine but unsuccessful efforts to obtain work; whether he will state the grounds on which the Department stated in a letter dated 11th April, 1936, that no information which would justify a revision of the decision referred to was communicated to the Department in view of the nature of the documentary evidence submitted.

The Unemployment Assistance Officer decided that the application for unemployment assistance made by Michael Fanning be refused as from the 3rd December, 1935, on the ground that the applicant, having refused an offer of suitable employment, did not satisfy Section 15 (1) (b) of the Unemployment Assistance Act, 1933. The applicant appealed and the Court of Referees, having considered the case, recommended that the application be refused. The court's recommendation was accepted by the Unemployment Assistance Officer. Representations were subsequently made on behalf of this applicant and certain documents were submitted. The matter was referred to the Unemployment Assistance Officer who, in accordance with the provisions of Section 20 (1) of the 1933 Act, decided that the representations made and the documents submitted did not contain any evidence which would warrant revision of the decision already given.
