Vol. 69 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inspection of Gravel Pits and Quarries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what provisions exist for the inspection of gravel pits and quarries; how many inspections have been made within the current year; whether such pits and quarries are registered; and, if not, whether he will make provision for compulsory registration.

Gravel pits and quarries are liable to inspection under the Factory and Workshop Acts, the Metalliferous Mines Regulation Acts, and the Quarries Act, 1894. Inspections are carried out by the Inspector of Mines and Quarries. 293 inspections, including inspections of sand and gravel quarries, have been made since the beginning of the present year. Occupiers of quarries are required by law to give notice of occupancy within one month of the beginning of occupation. Particulars of quarries notified to the Department in this way are entered in registers kept for the purpose.
