Vol. 69 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Letting of “Economic Farms.”

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that large numbers of men in County Meath were allotted "economic farms" in the past few years and are letting those farms on the 11 months' system, and obtaining work under the Meath County Council, and if he is prepared to do anything to prevent this practice.

Mr. Boland

I am aware that in some instances the allottees of parcels of untenanted land have not made the best use of them and have let them for grazing instead of working the lands themselves. The Land Commission have for some time past had in hands the general question of the user of allotted lands, and reports have been obtained on certain estates in several counties. These reports reveal that in some instances the lands have not been worked to the best advantage. Where allottees continue to make lettings and fail to attend to the proper working of the lands given them, the Land Commission will take steps to see that the lands are either properly worked or surrendered.
