Vol. 69 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Occupation of Kilkenny Barracks.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has authorised the taking of proceedings for possession against a number of poor families in temporary occupation of the married quarters at Kilkenny Military Barracks; whether he is aware that if these proceedings succeed these families will be homeless until such time as houses are provided for them, and whether in view of the fact that the board of health is pushing forward a scheme to make the necessary houses available he will stay the proceedings for possession, until alternative accommodation is available.

Legal proceedings for the recovery of possession of the married quarters at Kilkenny Military Barracks have been authorised. Practically all the occupants of the quarters entered into possession without authority, and the Commissioners of Public Works are advised that the premises have been condemned by the local sanitary authority as unfit for habitation.

In view of the danger of epidemic arising out of the insanitary condition of the premises, I am not prepared to stay the proceedings.
