Vol. 73 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Longford Fever Hospital.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware of the fact that the present fever hospital in Longford town, in which all fever cases, including typhoid fever, are treated, has been condemned repeatedly by medical officers of health; that the hospital is without any system of water borne sewerage, and that the sanitary arrangements are of the crudest type; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to remedy this grave state of affairs and to modernise conditions in accordance with public health requirements.

I am aware that the conditions in the fever hospital at Longford are not satisfactory. I am anxious that a new fever hospital should be provided by the local authority, but the acquistion of a site is bound up with the proposal for the purchase of lands on which to build a new county hospital.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of the fact that a very grave menace to public health exists there at the moment? It seems as if the delay in getting a site is going to go on for ever. Surely the Parliamentary Secretary should tell us what steps he proposes to take to prevent such a calamity?
