Vol. 73 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Citizens in Britain.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he has had under consideration the position of Irish citizens temporarily resident in Great Britain regarding liability for military service in that country in the event of war; and whether he has made any representations to the British Government in the matter; and, if so, what is the result of such representations.

I have considered this question and am satisfied that Irish citizens who are temporarily resident in Great Britain are not liable for military service in that country in the event of conscription being imposed there. No representations have been made to the British Government in the matter.

Would the Minister say whether Irish citizens permanently resident in Britain, who are covered in respect of nationality by the Citizenship and Nationality Act, would be similarly exempt from conscription?

I am afraid that is a question of which I would have to ask notice.
